梳毛（そもう）って、なに？

「梳毛」と書いて「そもう」と読みます。聞き慣れない言葉かもしれませんが、実はスーツ生地などにもよく使われている、由緒ある紡績方法です。

羊やアルパカ、モヘアなどの毛を、くしで丁寧に梳(す)くように整えて、短い繊維を取り除き、長い繊維だけを一方向に揃えてから撚りをかける。それが「梳毛糸」です。

反対に、繊維を整えずにふんわりと紡ぐ方法は「紡毛（ぼうもう）」と呼ばれます。紡毛はふくらみがあって温かみのある風合いに、梳毛はなめらかでツヤがあり、しなやかで丈夫な糸に仕上がります。

towayra.の糸は、1897年創業、愛知県一宮市の紡績会社・東和毛織株式会社で紡がれています。東和毛織は創業以来、梳毛だけを専門に手がけてきた紡績工場です。紡毛など他の紡ぎ方は一切行わず、梳毛一筋。英国産の毛や長い繊維の原毛を扱うために発達した「英式紡績」という、今では数少ない設備を持つ工場でもあります。

一つの紡ぎ方に特化してきたからこそ蓄積された技術で、一本一本、繊維に負担をかけないようゆっくりと。手間のかかる工程ですが、その分、細い番手でも均一で、編んだときにツヤと表情がきれいに出る糸になります。

派手さはないけれど、長く使うほどに良さがわかる糸。towayra.の糸は、工業糸として磨かれてきた素材を、手編みのために再編集した梳毛糸です。

What Is Worsted Yarn?

You may not have heard the word "worsted" used quite this way before, but it's actually a time-honored spinning method — the same one behind many classic suit fabrics.

To make worsted yarn, wool or hair fibers (like alpaca or mohair) are carefully combed to remove the shorter fibers and align the long ones in a single direction before twisting them into yarn.

The opposite approach — spinning fibers without combing or aligning them — is called "woolen" spinning. Woolen yarns come out soft and full of loft and warmth. Worsted yarns, by contrast, are smooth, lustrous, and strong.

Why every towayra. yarn is worsted

towayra. yarns are spun by Towa Keori Co., Ltd., a spinning mill founded in 1897 in Ichinomiya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Since its founding, Towa Keori has specialized exclusively in worsted spinning — no woolen, nothing else. It's also one of the few mills left with "English spinning" equipment, a method originally developed for British wool and other long-staple fibers.

That single-minded focus is what built the expertise behind every strand — spun slowly, with care not to strain the fiber. It's a demanding process, but it's exactly why even fine yarn counts come out even and consistent, with a beautiful sheen and texture once knitted.
