towayra. From the factory floor to your hands. Why I started towayra.

towayra.

towayra.

When I was young, my mother taught me to knit.

I remember wearing the sweater she made for me and feeling so happy I could hardly stand it. That feeling has never left me. But for the next twenty years, I wasn't in the world of hand knitting. I was on the other side — inside industrial knitwear.

When I studied at Studio Berçot , a fashion school in France, I was surrounded by students from all over the world. Some of them knitted between classes like breathing —

effortlessly, naturally. They would finish samples at incredible speed and weave hand knitting into their collections. In Europe, knitting is woven into daily life. Yarn exists in the everyday in a way I hadn't quite seen before.

Back in Japan, I built my career as an industrial knitwear designer. I worked with industrial yarns, launched a brand at a knit factory in Niigata. Looking back, I realize — I had always been led by yarn. And every time I designed a fine-gauge knit, the same thought kept coming back: "What would this yarn feel like, knitted by hand?"

The yarns chosen in industrial settings exist on a different level from what fills craft stores. The way stitches take shape. The density of the fiber. The feeling when you touch it. These are yarns refined by professionals over decades — and they had never reached the hands of hand knitters. Not a craft yarn. Not just an industrial yarn either.

I had been pulling the thread toward this moment for a long time. towayra. was born to close that gap. Towa Keori, founded in 1897 in Ichinomiya, Bishu.

The first time I walked into the mill, the old machines were turning — steady, unhurried, certain. Loud, yes. But with a quiet integrity to them. Not rushed. Unwavering. I knew then: this is where the yarn belongs.

This is the only place it could come from. Japan has extraordinary craftspeople. Yarn full of precision, care, and quiet devotion. I want to bring it to more people — especially to hand knitters around the world.

Still and unhurried. I hope you'll join me.
